Seti@Home is a government funded program designed to analize radio signals for signs of Extra-Terestrial life. The way it works is actually quite simple. Since monstrous computing power is required to analize all of the recorded radio signals, they came up with the idea of packaging the data into smaller 340K blocks (or Work Units), and then giving people the oppertunaty to download them and the program used for analizing them. Then using extra computer time and power, the program would kick in and start analizing the Work Units (with the screen-saver version, you can actually watch the analization proccess, with all of the waves and bars and stuff!). This is called "crunching". Currently, there are over 4.5 million registered users for Seti@Home, along with over a hundered thousand teams, of which WWSeti (mine) is in the top 100! It costs nothing to join, and almost none of your personal attention! Just go to the main page for Seti@Home and find the link to download the software. There should also be a "help" document if you wish to learn more. Regardless of whether you decide to crunch or not, check out our forums! See ya there!
